MedTalks Recap: The Truth About GLP-1s — What Social Media Isn’t Telling You
Doctors Hospital and Integra Healthcare recently hosted another sold-out MedTalks event at The Goat, Camana Bay, bringing together healthcare professionals and members of the public for an honest conversation around one of the most talked-about topics in modern medicine: GLP-1 medications.
Titled “The Truth About GLP-1s: What Social Media Isn’t Telling You, “The event explored the growing global conversation surrounding medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and other GLP-1 therapies — moving beyond social media headlines to discuss the science, realities, risks, benefits, and future implications of these medications.
The event reached capacity in under three hours, reflecting the increasing public interest surrounding weight loss medications, metabolic health, diabetes prevention, fertility, and long-term wellness.
The evening featured a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including:
- Dr. Seshadri Pramodh – Consultant Endocrinologist
- Dr. David Kwinter – Family Medicine & Urgent Care Physician
- Dr. Lisa-Marie Hinzmann – Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Reproductive Medicine Specialist
- Timothy (Tim) Heath, MPH – Wellness Manager, LiveWell Solutions
Together, the panel explored how GLP-1 medications are reshaping conversations around obesity, preventative medicine, chronic disease management, hormonal health, and lifestyle change.
What Are GLP-1 Medications?
One of the first discussions of the evening focused on helping attendees better understand what GLP-1 medications actually are and why they have generated so much international attention.
Originally developed for Type 2 Diabetes management, GLP-1 receptor agonists are now increasingly being used in obesity and metabolic health treatment due to their ability to support appetite regulation, blood sugar control, and weight reduction.
Panelists discussed how these medications are changing the medical understanding of obesity — shifting the conversation away from viewing obesity solely as a lifestyle issue and toward recognising it as a complex chronic disease influenced by biology, hormones, metabolism, and environmental factors.
The Impact of Social Media on GLP-1 Conversations
A major theme throughout the evening was the role social media has played in the rise of GLP-1 awareness.
The panel discussed how online platforms have dramatically increased public interest in medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy, while also contributing to misinformation, unrealistic expectations, and oversimplified narratives around rapid weight loss.
Conversations also explored the pressure created by viral transformation stories and celebrity-driven discussions, as well as the importance of medical supervision, patient education, and long-term treatment planning.
Lifestyle Change Still Matters
While GLP-1 medications can be powerful tools, panelists repeatedly reinforced that they are not a replacement for sustainable lifestyle habits.
Discussion topics included:
- Nutrition and adequate protein intake
- Strength training and preserving muscle mass
- Bone density and long-term health
- Sleep and stress management
- Building sustainable habits beyond rapid weight loss
Tim Heath highlighted the importance of viewing GLP-1 medications as part of a broader health strategy rather than a standalone solution.
Fertility, Hormones & Women’s Health
Another highly engaged portion of the evening focused on the relationship between GLP-1 medications, fertility, and women’s hormonal health. Dr. Lisa-Marie Hinzmann discussed how weight, insulin resistance, and metabolic health can impact fertility outcomes, while also addressing growing public conversations surrounding “Ozempic babies,” pregnancy planning, PMOS, and reproductive health.
The panel also explored why women considering pregnancy should speak with qualified healthcare professionals before starting or stopping these medications.
Long-Term Health & The Future of GLP-1s
The conversation concluded with discussions around the future of GLP-1 therapies, including affordability, access, oral GLP-1 medications, and newer therapies currently in clinical trials. Panelists emphasised the importance of long-term thinking, particularly around safely transitioning off medications, maintaining healthy habits, and creating realistic expectations for sustainable outcomes.
A recurring message throughout the evening was that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to weight management or metabolic health, and that successful outcomes require personalised, evidence-based care.
A Growing Community Conversation
The overwhelming turnout and audience engagement reinforced the growing demand for credible, balanced health conversations within the Cayman Islands community. MedTalks continues to serve as a platform designed to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and the public by creating approachable, evidence-based discussions around important and evolving healthcare topics.
