Calling All Lupus Warriors in the Cayman Islands!

For the first time ever, we’re launching a national study to understand how common Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is in the Cayman Islands. In simple terms, this study will help us count how many people are living with lupus here — whether they were newly diagnosed in 2024 or have had the condition for years.
Why Focus on Lupus?
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune condition that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, brain, and more.
Here’s why it matters:
- It primarily affects women of African descent
- It’s often underdiagnosed or misunderstood
- There’s no current local data on lupus in the Cayman Islands
- This study could change that — and spark real improvements in awareness, support, and care
Who’s Behind the Study?
This is a joint initiative by Doctors Hospital and the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority, led by Dr. Sharon Chambers, Consultant Rheumatologist at Doctors Hospital.
Who Can Join?
We’re looking for anyone diagnosed with SLE in 2024, whether it’s a brand-new diagnosis or something you’ve been living with for a while.
What’s Involved?
- A short questionnaire
- A review of medical records related to your diagnosis
- Optional interviews with you or your doctor
- Signing a consent form to participate
That’s it! No needles, no tests, no medications.
When’s the Deadline?
We’re recruiting participants until December 28, 2025 — but don’t wait too long!
Why Your Participation Matters
By taking part, you’ll help:
- Raise awareness about lupus
- Inform better healthcare planning
- Advocate for funding and support services
- Create data that can influence real change
