Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Orthopaedics

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, also known as PRP therapy, is a non-surgical treatment now offered through the Doctors Hospital Orthopaedics Department in Grand Cayman. PRP is used in orthopedics to support healing in joints and other musculoskeletal tissues using components from a patient’s own blood.

What is PRP Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma is created from a blood sample that is processed in a centrifuge to separate blood components, including red blood cells and white blood cells, and increase the concentration of platelets. Platelets contain growth factors that play a role in the body’s natural healing process.

PRP therapy delivers these concentrated platelets directly to the area being treated through PRP injections, supporting recovery in joints, tendons, and other soft tissue.

Because PRP is made from the patient’s own blood, it is considered a natural treatment option.

Call our care team to speak with a specialist and explore your options.

Concentrated PRP

Doctors Hospital offers concentrated PRP, which contains a higher concentration of platelets than standard PRP preparations. This approach may improve effectiveness and provide longer-lasting benefits compared to steroid injections for some conditions, including those where an anti-inflammatory effect is desired.

PRP therapy is part of the broader field of regenerative medicine, supporting tissue repair and tissue rejuvenation without surgery.

Conditions That May Be Treated with PRP

PRP treatment may be considered for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

• Acute injuries
• Degenerative joint conditions
• Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
• Rotator cuff conditions
• Sports injuries
• Trauma-related injuries affecting joints or soft tissue
• Certain causes of back pain, where clinically appropriate

Your orthopaedic specialist will determine whether PRP is an appropriate option based on your diagnosis and symptoms.

If you’re experiencing any of these conditions, PRP therapy may be an option. Call our care team to find out if this treatment is right for you.

How PRP Treatment is Performed

PRP treatment is performed in a clinical setting using state-of-the-art preparation techniques and typically involves:

  • Drawing approximately 180 mL of blood
  • Processing the blood to concentrate platelets
  • Injecting the platelet-rich plasma directly into the affected joint or specific injection site

Treatment may involve a single platelet-rich plasma injection or a series of PRP injections, depending on the condition and individual treatment plan.

What to Expect

PRP therapy is minimally invasive, and many patients return to light activities shortly after treatment. While PRP treatment is not completely pain-free for all patients, discomfort is usually temporary and varies by injection site and condition treated.

PRP therapy may support improved function and comfort, which can contribute to overall quality of life. Response varies depending on the condition being treated.

PRP therapy may be covered by some insurance plans in the Cayman Islands. Coverage varies by provider, and patients are encouraged to confirm benefits in advance.

Is PRP Right for You?

PRP therapy may be an option if you are experiencing joint pain, stiffness, or reduced movement related to injury or degeneration.

A consultation with a Doctors Hospital board certified orthopaedic specialist is required to determine appropriate treatment options and develop a personalised treatment plan.

Call our care team today to book your consultation or ask any questions.
