Introduction
Screening tests are done to detect potential health disorders or diseases in people who do not have any symptoms of disease. The goal is early detection and lifestyle changes or surveillance, to reduce the risk of disease, or to detect it early enough to treat it most effectively.

Preventative Health Screening Tests
Colonoscopy
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among men and women in the US and it occurs most often in individuals over the age of 50. It is recommended that individuals be screened for colon cancer starting at age 50. Recently, due to an increase in colon and rectal cancers among adults under age 50, the American Cancer Society is encouraging earlier screening at age 45. Regular screening through a colonoscopy can prevent colorectal cancer. A polyp could take 10-15 years to develop into cancer. With a colonoscopy, your doctor can find and remove polyps before they reach the cancerous stage.
Diabetes
It’s recommended that all adults be screened for diabetes or prediabetes starting at age 45, regardless of weight. Additionally, individuals without symptoms of diabetes should be screened if they are overweight or obese and have a family history of diabetes.
The Department of Radiology at Doctors Hospital offers a complete range of diagnostic and screening services with one of the most advanced imaging facilities in the Caribbean. Our state-of-the-art equipment and modern techniques provide patients with accurate evaluation in a safe and caring environment.
Mammography
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends women between the ages of 50-74 years of age perform a mammogram every two years.
Prostate specific antigen (PSA)
This blood test measures the prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels in the blood. The prostate specific antigen levels can be elevated in the presence of prostate cancer.
Pap Test
Pap smears are samples of cells taken from the cervix in women to look for cellular changes indicative of cervical cancer. The Pap smear is an important screening test in sexually active women under the age of 65, to detect cancer at a stage when there are often no symptoms.
Cholesterol Screening
Cholesterol screening is performed by a blood test. People with high cholesterol measurements from a blood sample have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), than those with cholesterol in the normal range.
