Frontiers of Healthcare 2025 Explores Resilience, Innovation, and Community
The Cayman Islands’ healthcare sector came together in force last month for the 2nd Annual Frontiers of Healthcare Conference, hosted by Doctors Hospital Cayman and Integra Healthcare. With more than 300 participants, the event gathered clinicians, policymakers, innovators, and health-leaders under the 2025 theme: “Building Resilient Healthcare Systems.”
Opening Perspectives on Resilience
In her welcome address, Dr. Margo McCrae, CEO of Doctors Hospital, emphasised that resilience in healthcare extends beyond buildings and budgets:
“At its core, resilience is about people. It’s about the clinicians who show up every day, the patients who put their trust in us, and the community that supports and sustains us. Technology and infrastructure are essential, but without people at the heart of the system, they are just tools. True resilience is built when a community works together to adapt, innovate, and care for one another.”
Dr Yaron Rado, Chairman of the Board for Doctors Hospital and Integra Healthcare, echoed this message, underlining the importance of pairing human expertise with innovation:
“The future of healthcare will not be written by technology alone, nor by human effort alone. It is the intersection of the two—investment in innovation, empowered by skilled professionals and supported by a strong community—that creates a healthcare system capable of withstanding challenges and thriving in the face of change. That is the pathway to true resilience.”
The Minister of Health, Hon. Katherine Wilks, highlighted the government’s focus on prevention, access, and long-term sustainability, affirming that resilience means ensuring every Cayman resident has equitable care and opportunities for healthier lives.
Meanwhile, media reporting from the conference captured several high-impact sessions:
- A presentation by neurologist Dr Ryan Punambolam warned of a looming dementia crisis for the Cayman Islands, projecting that prevalence could double by 2050 if strategic action is not taken. (Cayman Compass)
- Cardiologist Dr Krzysztof Kukula delivered a pointed address under the banner “heart attack time bomb already exploded,” urging improvements in data collection and preventive care in cardiovascular disease. (Cayman Compass)
- A panel on AI and youth mental health featured Dr Stenette Davis and others highlighting how children’s use of chat bots might carry unexpected mental-health risks. (Cayman Compass)
A Milestone Moment
One of the most memorable moments of the day came when the leadership team from Doctors Hospital took the stage to unveil a giant novelty-sized JCI Golden Seal, celebrating the hospital’s recent achievement of 8th Edition Joint Commission International accreditation. The standards introduced new criteria around environmental sustainability, global health impact, patient-centred care, and advanced healthcare technology. (Cayman Compass)
The dramatic reveal drew enthusiastic applause from the audience, marking not just a milestone for the hospital, but also a proud moment for Cayman’s healthcare sector on the global stage.
Hot Topics and Big Ideas
The programme spanned a wide array of clinical and policy areas, including dementia, paediatric neurology, dermatology, oncology, ENT innovations, and sports medicine.
A clear standout was the “Hot Topics & Trends” panel, which drew significant debate on the rise of artificial intelligence in healthcare and the expanding role of GLP-1 medications in obesity and metabolic disease management. Attendees praised the panel’s balance of practical applications and bold, future-oriented insights.
The topic of AI’s potential impact on children’s mental health, for example, resonated strongly in local media coverage. (Cayman Compass)
A Highly Engaged Audience
The day’s agenda was designed for participation, with interactive exhibits, and gamified activations woven into the programme. These elements helped spark discussion, foster collaboration, and create a sense of energy throughout the event. Breaks and networking sessions gave participants the chance to forge new professional connections and exchange experiences in a more personal setting.
Networking with a View
The conference concluded with a cocktail reception at Rooftop Bar Pompom, where participants and speakers continued conversations in a relaxed atmosphere, cementing relationships formed during the day.
Growing Momentum
Now in its second year, Frontiers of Healthcare has quickly established itself as a premier forum for knowledge exchange in the Cayman Islands—providing CME credits, showcasing cutting-edge technologies, and creating space for thought-leadership and debate. According to the host organisations, planning is already underway for the 2026 edition, promising an even broader platform for collaboration and innovation.
