Exploring the Heart of Cardiology: A Conversation with a Passionate Cardiologist, Dr Krzysztof Kukula

At Doctors Hospital, our unwavering commitment to your changing health bridges many specialties in the healthcare field. We’re here to help you navigate them. In honour of “Heart Month” we sat down with Dr Krzysztof Kukula, the head of our Cardiology department, to learn more about him, his professional experience and what patients can expect when working with a Cardiologist.

To book a consultation with Dr Kukula, visit www.mydoctors.ky/appointments or contact our Care Centre at 345-325-9000.

Can you share a little about your background and what inspired you to become a cardiologist?
A: During my university years I did some research related to neurophysiology and cardiovascular physiology, so consequently, specializing in either neurology or cardiology seemed logical. I chose cardiology as at that time it seemed a more rapidly evolving field

What do you enjoy most about your work in cardiology?
A: Coronary intervention

Outside of your medical profession, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
A: I seem to have less and less time for them, but books, swimming and skiing are or used to be the main ones

For the average person looking to improve heart health, what are a few simple lifestyle changes you recommend?
A: It’s what we all know and many of us don’t like…  Avoid the extremes, have a balanced lifestyle and diet, avoid being overweight, monitor your risk factors (see your doctor from time to time on a proactive basis, not just when you are very ill); live actively, have a positive outlook on life and a lot of friends…

What are some common misconceptions about heart health that you often encounter in your practice?
A: That it’s just the cholesterol you need to watch…

Any advice for individuals trying to balance a demanding career with a healthy lifestyle?
A: Stress at work is not necessarily bad if you combine it with a little time for yourself daily, are a positive person, stick to healthy, preferably vegan-like diet and channel the stress to exercise (but with no extremes).

Are there any exciting advancements or technologies in cardiology that you find particularly promising or interesting?
A: Yes, quite a few. Difficult to find just one or two, but mostly the progress in non-surgical structural heart intervention and modern treatment of dyslipidemia; also modern heart imaging and perhaps in the near future – gene therapy.

How do you stay updated on the latest developments in your field?
A: Reading, reading, courses and conferences. It is now easier than ever before.

What’s your favorite heart-healthy meal or snack?
A: Snacks are a big no no😊; Greek salad

If you could give one piece of advice for maintaining a healthy heart, what would it be?
A: Keep moving; stick to Mediterranean or DASH diet. Know your risk factors.

How do you approach educating and empowering your patients to take charge of their heart health?
A: First of all, I try to explain the “why”

Are there any community outreach or educational initiatives you’re involved in to promote heart health awareness?
A: We often engage in the activities of Cayman Heart Fund and Lions Club. Also, we reach to professionals in our continuing medical education events

How do you think community engagement can contribute to better heart health on a broader scale?
A: It can certainly promote understanding what cardiovascular disease is mostly about, but I am afraid it does not translate very well into public health improvement. The targeted population are those people who are already interested in their health. People we really need to reach are usually those less interested.

How can individuals contribute to advancing heart health research and awareness?
A: We can all support organizations engaged in research and/or funding public health initiatives. This is perhaps especially important in countries without a centrally financed health care system.
